Overview

Suburbs, places that belong to the world more than to cities that generate them: apparently impersonal and anonymous places. but perhaps for this reason familiar to the many people who live  there; these places are powerful and - more than others - can speak to the heart of those who know how to observe through unexpected suggestions; territories that are a symbol for modernity, that have grown quickly, committed to giving home, work, spaces to communities gathered around the historical centers.

The suburbs, with their own gray tones, their contradictions and their own silence, are the perfect scenario within which a creative person can operate.

It is therefore to these suburbs that, with the scientific contribution of G124 and the collaboration of the Unipol Group, Tresoldi Academy looks for its first workshop. The mission goes beyond a mere teaching experience: bringing beauty where habit has led us not to look for it, to think of art in an abandoned place, to open a new and modern point of view on these spaces.

Journey to Bologna/Modena, installation and conclusion of the workshop

Site 1: via Stalingrado (Bologna)

The first site will be the complex located in Bologna in a lot between Viale Aldo Moro, via Cesare Gnudi and via Stalingrado. The latter, starting from the railway bridge, crosses the very first outskirts of Bologna and joins the roads that are considered as the limit of the historic center of Bologna with the first urban strip located between the ancient city and the freeway. Characterized from the nearby Unipol Group headquarter which goes over via Stalingrado and is proposed as a modern urban door, the area is located in the immediate vicinity of the exhibition area - a monumental work of the early seventies by Kenzo Tange. The real estate complex currently consists of four buildings: a shed on via Stalingrado, a shed on via Gnudi, a small building and a garage.

Site 2: Parco XXII Aprile (Modena)

Another project site will be Park XXII Aprile in Modena, built in 1976 in the Crocetta district. Inside, there are some structures with a strong character; these take inspiration from the stylistic trends of the 70s and other prestigious parks built in the city by architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi. The park, enclosed between the built urban fabric, is one of the main equipped green areas of the city. Inside, there are several wooded areas, lawns and various types of equipment. In the city, there are three parks designed to host events and gatherings and the XXII Aprile Park is among them.

G124 is the code that identifies the room in Palazzo Giustiniani - the Italian Senate building - assigned to architect and senator Renzo Piano. As soon as he became a senator, he decided he would make sense of his role by dealing with a major project for our country: the suburbs, which represent the city of the future that we will leave to the children. The G124 is a group made up of young architects (all under-35 and paid with the Senator’s salary) who are coordinated by tutors and helped by other professional figures (sociologists, anthropologists, economists, critics, town planners...) and have the task of producing studies on a suburb in one year of work.
